Our Mission and Story

At Mount Hood Livability Coalition, our mission is to cultivate a vibrant and sustainable mountain community that prioritizes livability, safety, and strikes a harmonious balance between the needs of our residents and the positive impact of tourism.

Through our principles, we strive to raise awareness, advocate for change, and work toward the implementation of regulations that address the challenges posed by short-term rental models. Our ultimate goal is to foster sustainable and harmonious communities where housing remains affordable, residents feel safe, and the benefits of tourism are realized without compromising the well-being of our neighborhoods.

Our Principles

Community Well-being

We prioritize the well-being of communities by advocating for regulations that ensure the preservation of the social fabric, safety, and quality of life for residents. We aim to prevent the negative impacts associated with unchecked short-term rentals, such as excessive noise, increased traffic, and reduced access to affordable housing.

Fair Housing

We support policies that promote fair and equitable access to housing for all individuals, irrespective of their socioeconomic background. We believe that the unregulated growth of short-term rentals can exacerbate housing shortages, drive up rental prices, and limit the availability of long-term rental options, thereby impacting vulnerable populations negatively.

Responsible Tourism

We recognize the importance of responsible and sustainable tourism practices. Our advocacy efforts aim to strike a balance between the economic benefits of tourism and the need to protect the cultural and environmental integrity of our communities. We advocate for regulations that promote responsible short-term rental practices and prevent the concentration of short-term rentals in specific areas.

Data Transparency

We emphasize the importance of transparent and accessible data on short-term rentals to inform evidence-based decision-making. We support policies that require short-term rental platforms to share anonymized data on listings, occupancy rates, and rental durations to facilitate research, monitoring, and enforcement of regulations.

Collaborative Governance

We believe that effective regulation requires collaboration among all stakeholders, including local governments, community organizations, residents, and short-term rental platforms. We actively engage in dialogue and partnerships to develop comprehensive and balanced regulatory frameworks that protect the interests of all stakeholders.

Fire Prevention

We are in a community on the edge of forest and woodlands. Fire is a danger during dry months. Many Short Term rental properties are advertised as having fire pits and outdoor campfire settings. As residents of Hoodland, we all need to do everything in our power to assure accidental human fires do not destroy our homes.

A Letter from the Board

Welcome!

We are the Board of Directors of the Mount Hood Livability Coalition, a non-profit organization dedicated to the regulation of short-term rentals in rural areas. Our mission is to ensure that these rentals contribute positively to the communities they inhabit, rather than detracting from them.

Our organization was founded on the belief that everyone – homeowners, renters, and neighbors – should benefit from the presence of short-term rentals. We work tirelessly to ensure that these rentals are regulated in a way that respects the rights of homeowners, protects renters, and preserves the character and tranquility of our rural communities.

We believe in collaboration and inclusivity, which is why we strive to work with all stakeholders – homeowners, renters, local residents, and policymakers – to create regulations that are fair and effective. By working together, we can ensure that short-term rentals contribute to the livability and sustainability of our rural areas.

We invite you to explore our website to learn more about our work and how you can get involved. Whether you’re a homeowner considering renting your property, a renter looking for a place to stay, or a local resident with concerns about short-term rentals in your area, we’re here to help.

Thank you for visiting us. We look forward to working with you to make our rural communities even better places to live.

Warm Regards,

The Board of Directors
